Managing Life with Adult Braces

Never think it’s too late to get adult braces. Many people 30 years old and above are still investing in these oral devices for the purpose of correcting their bite, improving their appearance and having a perfect smile. If you’ve been attached with braces, you have to learn how to adjust to take care of these for a long time. You will minimize the duration of treatment and get the best results by following a few simple rules and tips.

Rules on Eating

Patients usually do not feel like chewing or eating during the first two weeks because of discomfort and mild pain in their teeth, inner cheeks, inner lips, gums and mouth. It can feel quite odd having the wire brush against your lips and cheeks but you’ll get used to it very soon. A few decades ago, dentists usually had a very long list of things to stay away from such as gummy bears, chewing gum, jawbreakers and hard pretzels. Adults, however, are expected not to eat as much candy and sugary treats so the list can be shorter compared to kids.

During the first week, it’s ideal to eat soft foods or take in liquids only during the first three days to avoid pain and tooth sensitivity. Some of the things you also have to stay away from while on adult braces include nuts, corn, meatballs, meatloaf, cheese, sandwiches, cooked eggs, waffles, pancakes, French toast, soggy cereal, cottage cheese, broiled or baked fish, soft cooked meat like roast beef or pot roast, oatmeal, French fries, yogurt, non-crusty bread, saltine crackers, caramel and chocolate. These can easily stick to your braces and can be very hard to remove.

About the Dental Kit

Pack a dental kit or buy one if there’s any available. This should always be with you wherever you go. The portable kit should include a full-size toothbrush, toothpaste, portable cup, dental wax, dental floss, a spiral dental brush, interdental picks, a tissue packet, breath spray, oral wash and a small mirror. You can keep these in a plastic bag or toilet purse. The idea of having a dental kit ready is to have all the tools available for cleaning your braces just in case something feels uncomfortable or food gets stuck in between.

Brushing Your Teeth

People brush their teeth differently, but experts recommend a certain routine to ensure that your mouth stays clean and fresh. Start by rinsing and spitting 3 to 4 times. Use a tooth pick to take out stuck food between teeth, under the brackets or around the hooks. Rinse and spit 2 more times. Brush your teeth using a toothbrush and regular toothpaste. Rinse and spit until your mouth is cleansed. Floss afterwards then check for anything left.

Visiting the Dentist

Wearing adult braces will require you to visit your dentist once or twice each month for readjustment. The dentist will tighten the bracket as your teeth slowly adjust to the right position. It is normal to feel some difference in your bite during treatment. Also report anything unusual so the dentist can provide the proper intervention and medication.
